Punching someone isn't a crime in itself my young friend.

The court accepted that Mr Gerrard believed he was acting in self-defence when he lashed out in the bar. However, it became clear after the incident from statememts and cctv etc that Mr Gerrard was under no considerable threat of violence himself. Hence his apology for mistakenly lashing out believeing he was acting out of self-defence.

Hence, no charge.

If you punched someone in school (snigger) because you thought they were gonna beat you up, but it later turned out that they weren't gonna beat you, would you not apologise? Accept you're wrong, apologise like a man, get on with your life.
